The concept for my Artist residency in Tuscany was based on "A Sense of Place" and how we come to form ideas and experiences in places that are unfamiliar to us. This was my first time travelling in Italy and my first time exploring the beautiful Tuscan village, Greve in Chianti. I wanted to tune into all of the sensory information we often take for granted when we gather ideas and knowledge about place. The light, the smells, the neat little rows of vineyards and olive trees and of course the iconic cyprus trees all had an immediate impact on me. But on closer inspection it was the history that permeated those hills, the old twisted boughs of the trees, the chiming bells in the distance, the narrow winding tracks and unchanged buildings that remained from centuries ago, the gathering of friends and family and food and the no nonsense approach to living that the Italians seem to pull off with flair and sophistication. I wanted to capture all of this in my paintings but mostly it was the simple life that prevailed in all that surrounded me.
