This painting forms part of my upcoming series which explores social communities and the natural environment and how they influence our identity and well-being.
This particular piece is about a piano being placed in a public space known as "the Shell" in Brunswick Heads, NSW for members of the community to play and enjoy. Originally the piano was ordered to be removed, but the community resisted and through local council support the piano was granted permission to stay. This painting is in reference to the joy I felt listening to the piano being played while looking out to the beautiful blue Simpsons Creek which flows through Brunswick Heads. It also depicts the scorn it attracted by a small minority and how free and simple pleasures seem to be increasingly hard to access in overly-governed societies.
